Compressed Binchotan Charcoal – White Oak (Ubame), Carbon Neutral

Produced by a reputable Japanese company, these binchotan-style charcoal sticks are made from white oak (ubamegashi) trees grown in China and compressed using advanced technology—with no additives or binders. The result is a clean-burning, high-performance charcoal that closely replicates the quality of traditional binchotan from Wakayama, which can sell for over $300 USD per 10kg.

Unlike conventional synthetic briquettes, these compressed sticks contain no hollow core, allowing them to burn for 4 to 5 hours, significantly longer than the 1–2 hours typical of lower-grade charcoal. They can reach temperatures of up to 1000°C, compared to 600–700°C for standard products, making them ideal for grilling and high-heat searing.

This charcoal is also "Carbon Neutral Plus", meaning the manufacturer plants more trees than are harvested, using only kanbatsuzai (間伐材)—thinned wood from responsibly managed forests. The production process ensures no wood is wasted, with charcoal made only to demand.

Key Features:

  • Sustainable Forestry: Made with thinned wood (間伐材) from sustainable forests. No chemical binders or additives.

  • Infrared Heat Like Traditional Binchotan: Burns cleanly and evenly, sealing moisture and enhancing flavour without flare-ups or smoke.

  • No Popping or Cracking: High-density compression prevents sparking, making it safer for open grilling or table use.

  • Long Burning Time: Solid-core sticks burn 2–3 times longer than typical briquettes, up to 5 hours per use.

  • Multi-Functional: Can be reused, or repurposed for water purification, odour absorption, or dehumidification.

Whether you're cooking yakitori, robatayaki, or want a low-smoke charcoal for refined outdoor grilling, this compressed binchotan offers professional-grade results with modern sustainability.

Comparable and at a gret price

Really happy to have found this. Much cheaper than the alternatives with the ssme (as far as I can tell) characteristics, notably almost no smoking.
