Tsubuan is a ready-to-use sweet red bean paste with a chunky texture. Carefully selected aduki (some say adzuki or azuki) beans are cooked until the starch inside is softened without the shell breaking, and then further cooked with sugar into this paste consistency.
Red bean paste is the default filling ("an", or "anko") for traditional and modern Japanese sweets. Translates literally to "filling with whole pieces", tsubu-an is characterized for its chunky texture, in contrast to koshi-an, which has a smooth texture.
You can use tsubuan for numerous sweets application, adding a typical Japanese flair on top of your desserts, pancakes, inside popsicles, or even spread it between butter toasts for a classic treat.
