The square handkerchief is primarily used in wagashi making as a soft, non-elastic barrier in order to create natural curvatures. Often you'd see wagashi artisans pressing a tool against a wagashi piece covered with the silk cloth, or wrapping and twisting it. Organic looking lines thus emerge.
